  Winter in Castro Valley

Winter in Castro Valley

Winter is beginning and there is a lot to see in the natural world in Castro Valley. The leaves are changing color and fall. Other things are more visible. Different plants seem to thrive. The clear night sky shows many stars, and the cold still nights bring Jack Frost to paint the roofs, fields, and trees. Take a look around and enjoy the sights of the season.

What's Can We See?
Without leaves, other things are visible. Tree bark and branches. Bird and squirrel nests and mistletoe. Different plants such as ferns, mosses, and liverworts. All of these thrive in the cool wet conditions of a Bay Area winter.

Winter Stars

Clear winter nights offer a good chance to see a lot of stars. So bundle up warm and go outside to see Orion, the Moon, the Peliades, and the Milky Way.

Discovering Nature

Naturalist Jim Conrad describes three simple steps to discovering nature all around you. His excellent website can be visited at www.backyardnature.net.
